Saving a diagram: what is saved and every message

This page adds detail to The diagram page: what happens when you click Save Diagram, and the messages the diagram page shows while it loads or saves, with what each one means. When Save Diagram can be clicked, and what Cancel does, is described in The diagram page.

What What happens when you click Save Diagram
Text you are still typing in a shape When you click Save Diagram, the text in the shape is finished and kept, as if you had clicked outside the shape, before the drawing is saved.
Name and Description Save Diagram saves the diagram’s name and description without spaces at the start and end. A change that only adds or removes such spaces does not count as a change, so on its own it does not make Save Diagram clickable.
The drawing Save Diagram saves the drawing in an editable form, together with a picture of it that the diagram library uses for the thumbnail and the preview, and that is used when the diagram is inserted in a text field.
Pages A diagram has one page: Save Diagram keeps only the first page of the drawing. This also applies to a drawing that comes into the drawing editor with several pages, for example by import. No message tells you that the other pages are left out.
The Updated date in the diagram library Saving a diagram changes its Updated date only when the name or the description has changed; see Diagram library: sorting, dates, paging and narrow windows.
Cancel on the diagram page Greyed out while a save is running.
Time limit for a save The diagram page waits up to 20 seconds for the drawing editor to hand over the drawing. If it takes longer, you get an error message and stay on the diagram page, so you can save again.
After a successful save A message that the diagram was created or updated, and the diagram library is shown again.

Diagrams already inserted in documents do not change when you save; see Insert a diagram in a document.

Message When it appears What to do
“Loading draw.io editor…” and “Please wait while we initialize the diagram editor” While the drawing editor starts. Wait until the drawing editor is shown.
