Build a graphical analysis

A graphical analysis is a named set of bar charts built from one or more risk analyses. In Risk management, open Graphical analysis, click Create New, type a name, add charts with Add new Chart, and click Save graph. Nothing is stored until you save: if you leave the tab or click Index before saving, your unsaved work is dropped without a warning.

  • Risk management appears in the left menu only if your company has the module and you have at least the Read right on its row. If you don’t see it, contact your user administrator. See The top bar and the left menu.
  • To see Graphical analysis and open graphs, you need the Read right on the Risk management row. Saving a new graph needs the Create right; saving changes to an existing graph needs the Edit right. Your user administrator grants these rights; see Give a user access rights.
  • The charts count assessed risk. A risk element appears in a chart only for the matrix risk types where both its probability and its consequence are set; see Assess original and residual risk.
  1. Open Risk management and select Graphical analysis. The Graph index lists the graphs you can see.
  2. Click Create New. An empty graph page opens.
  3. Type a name in the name field (“Type analysis name”). Save graph stays disabled until the graph has a name.
  1. Click Add new Chart. The Select Risk analysis dialog opens with all the company’s risk analyses.
  2. Find the analyses:
    • Type in Search to narrow the list by title.
    • Click one of the field links above the list (Facilitator or one of the global fields used as columns on the risk index) and choose a value. The list then shows the analyses that match every value you have chosen. These choices are reset each time the dialog opens.
  3. Click each analysis you want in the chart; selected analyses are highlighted. Click again to deselect. Select all selects every analysis that matches the field values you chose. It does not take the Search text into account, so check the selection after using it.
  4. Click Add Chart. The button is disabled until at least one analysis is selected.

A new chart shows a bar per selected analysis (Show Risk), counting original risk, with no filters.

  1. Click the cog (Chart Settings) in the chart’s header:

    • Under Chart types, choose Bar for vertical bars, or the other button for horizontal bars.
    • Under Options, choose what the bars show: Show Risk, Show Items (one analysis only), Aggregated data or Count top 10 risk items across analyses. See “What the bars count” below.
    • Tick the residual-risk checkbox to add bars for residual risk. Tick Sum to add up the scores instead of counting. Neither is offered with Count top 10 risk items across analyses; that option instead lets you count by risk area or by risk factor.
    • Tick Single line to give the chart the full width of the page.
    • Click Close. The chart has already been redrawn with your choices.
  2. To limit the chart, click + Filters. Choose a filter, enter or select a value and click Add Filter:

    • Area: keeps risk elements whose risk area contains the text you type.
    • The risk-factor filter: keeps risk elements whose risk factor contains the text.
    • The status filter: keeps risk elements with the status you select in “Select status”.
    • Color: keeps the colour you select in “Select Color”. Colour names are shown in English.
    • Sort: each click moves between no sorting, ascending and descending. Bars are sorted by their original-risk total.

Each filter applies to this chart only. Active filters appear as tags in the chart header; click a tag to remove that filter.

  3. To give the chart your own heading, click the pencil (Custom Title) and type the title. Clear the text to go back to the analysis names.

  4. To change which analyses the chart uses, click the chart’s title. The same dialog opens; click Update Chart when done.

  5. Repeat Add new Chart for more charts. To remove a chart, click its x; it is removed at once, without a confirmation.

  1. If you created the graph (you are shown as Creator in Graph index), you can tick Locked so that others cannot save changes to it. Ticking Locked also ticks Hidden, which hides the graph from other users’ Graph index. Hidden can be changed only while Locked is ticked; untick it if others should still see the locked graph.
  2. Click Save graph. The graph is stored with its name, Locked and Hidden, and every chart with its settings, filters, sort and custom title.

The bars are stacked by colour. The colour of a risk element’s segment is the matrix colour at its probability × consequence for one matrix risk type.

Option Bars
Show Risk One bar per selected analysis, labelled with the analysis title. For each risk element in the analysis and each matrix risk type where probability and consequence are set, the matching colour segment grows by 1. With the residual-risk checkbox ticked, each analysis gets a second bar, “(residual risk)”, counted from the residual values.
Show Items One bar per risk element of the selected analysis (Show Items works with one analysis only), labelled with its risk area, counted per matrix risk type in the same way.
Aggregated data One bar, “Aggregated Data”, totalling all selected analyses (plus “Aggregated Data (Residual Risk)” with residual risk ticked).
Count top 10 risk items across analyses The ten most frequent risk areas (or risk factors) among the risk elements of the selected analyses. Each bar is the number of risk elements with that value; risk elements with no value form their own bar. This option does not use the Top 10 flag on risk elements; it counts the most frequent risk areas or risk factors.

With Sum ticked, a chart in Show Risk, Show Items or Aggregated data adds probability × consequence for each risk element and matrix risk type instead of adding 1. For example, a risk element with 2 × 3 on one risk type and 1 × 4 on another adds 6 to the first colour and 4 to the second.

The graph shows its charts two per row; a chart with Single line, or a last chart without a partner, takes the full width. After Save graph, the graph is listed in Graph index with you as Creator.

Clicking a bar shows what is behind it. In Show Items, clicking a bar opens that risk element in its analysis in a new tab. In the other options, clicking a coloured segment opens a Risk items list of the risk elements behind it; click a row to open that risk element.

  • Save before you leave. Settings, filters, titles and removed charts all take effect on screen at once, but are stored only by Save graph.
  • Saving needs the right. Saving a new graph needs the Create right, and saving changes to an existing graph needs the Edit right; without it the graph is not saved, and no message tells you so. Go back to Graph index and check that the graph and your changes are there.
  • Show Items needs one analysis. If you add or update a chart with more than one analysis while Show Items is chosen, the chart switches to Show Risk.
  • Legend. The legend under the chart lists the colours. Click a colour in the legend to include or exclude it.
  • Count top 10 is not the Top 10 flag. Count top 10 risk items across analyses has nothing to do with the Top 10 checkbox on risk elements (see Copy, reorder, flag and delete risk elements). It also ignores the area, risk-factor and status filters.
  • Deleting a graph. In Graph index, the x in the Delete column deletes a graph after a confirmation. Deleting a graph needs the Create right.
  • Every control is described in The graphical analysis page.
